Guelaguetza
Excellent food from Mexico’s Oaxca region and famous for its chocolate infused “Black Mole”. Located in the heart of Los Angeles’ Koreatown, this delightful restaurant offers large value-orientated portions of authentic Oaxacan cuisine. Guelaguetza is family owned and operated and from the Oaxacan region of Mexico where they go each year to handpick their ingredients and carefully select the partners to work with. Drop in for some really great Mexican dishes and with a taste of the Mole or a sip of their Michelada, be transported to the Oaxaca region of Mexico for an evening. Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza Restaurant is a family owned and operated business at Mercado la Paloma in south Los Angeles. This fine dining establishment specializes in Yucatecan food from the southeast region of Mexico and over its fifteen years in business has receieved numerous culinary awards. The food here is unique and delicious, very different from other Mexican food that you may be familiar with. The Yucatan peninsula of Mexico has a mixture of Spanish, Mayan and Lebanese dishes. Chef and owner Gilberto Cetina combines these dishes and adds a touch of his own ingredients and ideas to give customers an experience in Mexican cuisine they are unlikely to find anywhere else. Have a seat in the pretty marketplace and order the antojitos, the tacos, the tamales, or anything else on Cetina’s menu that you may like and do not forget the house made habanero sauce.

Juquila
A small, working-class restaurant with prices to match, Juquilla is set on the West Side and serving dishes from Mexico’s Oaxaca region. This is a no-frills spot where you can go out to eat with your friends while joining the locals who regularly fill up this place. When you first walk in you may not think so but this place can compete with the best of them. Be sure to order something with the signature mole sauces from the rich and chocolatey negro (black) to the very spicy rojo (red). Delicious! There are also daily specials like salty cactus salad, shrimp cocktail and steak fajitas. If in doubt order the Oaxacan combination plate that is brimming with very tasty items like chorizo, tazajo (thinly sliced steak) and quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese).

Elvirita Cemitas Poblamas
This little eatery specializes in cemitas, perhaps the greatest of Mexico’s sandwiches. Elvirita’s is likely the first of L.A.’s cemitas restaurants and still probably the best. Cemitas is a multilayered concoction on an oversized, sesame-seeded roll, toasted to a fine crunchiness and crammed with ripe avocado, smoky chipotle chiles, an astringent herb called papalo and threads of hand-shredded quesillo with a layer of crispy fried beef or chicken over the chiles. There is the Poblano specialty called taco arabe, carbonized nubs of pork dressed with chipotle salsa and rolled into a flour tortilla. Also, there are giant quesadillas stuffed with the black, musky fungus huitlacoche. You can combine the two most famous Puebla dishes in cemitas de mole: sandwiches stuffed with shredded chicken in a spicy, pitch-black mole Poblano. If you like sandwiches, this may be the best you’ll ever have.
